Almost every modern panel has a 24 V DC rail feeding sensors, PLC I/O, contactor coils and indicators. The power supply that makes it is easy to undersize and hard to forgive — a sagging 24 V bus makes sensors drop out and relays chatter. This guide keeps the choice simple.
Total the wattage of every DC load, then add 20–30 % headroom for inrush and ageing. A 24 V coil pulling 3 W, ten sensors at 1 W each, and a few indicators add up faster than expected; a 100 W supply is the common entry point for a small panel, with 240 W and 480 W for larger ones. Running a supply at 90 % load shortens its life and leaves no room for expansion.
24 V is the control standard: it carries further down a wire with less drop, is safer to touch than 12 V at the same power, and matches almost all industrial sensors and PLCs. Choose 12 V only when legacy loads demand it. A 24 V bus also survives voltage drop better across long sensor runs.
For 230 V sites use a single-phase supply; for 400 V three-phase boards a three-phase-input supply balances the load and keeps the DC bus up if one phase drops. Confirm the input range covers the site's real voltage — a supply rated 100–240 V auto-ranges across regions, which matters for export and for sites with weak grids.
